Fibrooptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)

We provide fibrooptic endoscopic evaluations (FEES) of swallowing in the Outpatient Neuro Speech Therapy Department. Speech/language pathologists use FEES in conjunction with other techniques to determine the level and type of dysphagia, or swallowing disorder, and the best course of treatment. During this procedure, therapists pass a small tube with a camera attached to the level of the patient’s pharynx. With this “scope” in place, the patient performs swallowing exercises, including swallowing food and/or liquid. The therapist can perform a direct assessment of the swallow function as well as observing the patient’s response to any therapeutic procedure.

We require a physician’s referral and insurance authorization for a FEES evaluation as part of speech therapy. For further information or to schedule an appointment, please call (410) 448-6421.
