The 128-bed William Donald Schaefer Rehabilitation Center at Kernan Hospital is one of the largest and most sophisticated facilities of its kind in the United States. The 155,000 square-foot facility has four inpatient units that each contain 32 beds. Each unit is dedicated for a specific diagnostic group or level of care, including:

• Stroke
• Traumatic Brain Injury
• Spinal Cord/Multiple Trauma
• Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation, which includes both the Amputee Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Inpatient Rehabilitation Programs

The bright, airy patient rooms are equipped with wheelchair-accessible showers and large windows that allow patients to have views of the grounds and wooded areas surrounding the 88-acre hospital campus located near the western border of Baltimore City at Baltimore County. The new center also has an indoor hydrotherapy pool.

The William Donald Schaefer Rehabilitation Center at Kernan Hospital is a member of the University Rehabilitation Network, which links seven rehabilitation programs to offer comprehensive care to patients at every stage in their recovery.

• Adaptive Sports Program: The Adapted Sports Program at Kernan maximizes participation for individuals with disabilities in adapted recreational and competitive sports, in order to promote independence, self-confidence, health and overall well-being through structured, individual and team sports. The program includes the Adapted Golf Program, Wheelchair Basketball, and Kernan Collision - Wheelchair Rugby.
• Lokomat: Kernan is the only facility in Maryland with a robotic treadmill that may help patients with spinal cord injuries or stroke to walk again.
