Individuals who have experienced a spinal cord injury often have difficulty with mobility, self-care, work-related skills, leisure activities and community reintegration. The Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program at Kernan is especially designed to help individuals with spinal cord injury or dysfunction reach their highest level of independent living.

The program includes both inpatient and outpatient services. The inpatient spinal cord injury unit is bright, comfortable and modern in design.

The unit's onsite therapy facility features kitchen and bathroom setups for training in daily living skills, a complete set of modern therapy equipment for strengthening and retraining, a full set of manual and electric wheelchairs for patient use, and an indoor aquatic therapy pool.
