Kernan Hospital's stroke rehabilitation program receives the highest level of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). More»

Individuals who have experienced strokes or other neurological disorders (such as Parkinson's disease) are likely to have medical problems that include trouble with mobility, swallowing, language and communication, and performance of daily living skills. These patients will require significant family support after discharge. The goal of rehabilitation is to help these individuals reach their highest level of independence function and return to productive living in their homes and communities. This is accomplished through individualized programs of physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, social and cognitive retraining, group treatment and education.

The Stroke Unit is dedicated to providing inpatient rehabilitation services to individuals who have experienced strokes and other neurological disorders. The unit is bright, modern and comfortable in design. In keeping with Kernan Hospital's philosophy of patient-focused care, all rehabilitation services are provided on the unit by healthcare professionals who specialize in the treatment of stroke. The unit's on-site therapy gym houses a kitchen to encourage patients to develop meal-planning, cooking, and kitchen safety skills for use at home. For patients working to improve their independent walking skills, Kernan Hospital features a Healing Garden with different types of level and uneven surfaces on which they can practice. An indoor therapy pool is also available within the hospital for patients who can benefit from aquatic therapy.
