Kernan's Stroke Unit provides clinical evaluations, medical care, and therapeutic activities tailored to each patient's individual goals, needs and abilities. Comprehensive rehabilitation services are provided to help patients recover daily living skills, achieve community re-entry, and address any problems with:
Six days a week patients receive physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy and therapeutic recreational therapy to help them reach their rehabilitation goals. Therapists often work together to provide co-treatment in a supportive environment for groups of patients who share specific goals and interest. Patients admitted to the Stroke Unit must be able to actively participate in 3 or more hours of therapy daily. The average length of stay is 12 days and most patients return home after discharge.
In preparation for patient's discharge, a team of therapists may conduct on-site assessments of the patient's home. Based on their findings, the team provides specific recommendations for improvements that will make it easier for the patient to perform daily living skills and job functions in upon discharge. In addition, the patient may return home for a few hours during his inpatient stay on a Functional Therapeutic Visit (FTV) so that the team can evaluate his needs and skills in his own home environment. Community re-entry outings are provided regularly to allow groups of patients to practice their developing skills in real-world situations. The Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation Program also features comfort- and safety-focused patient rooms, treatment gym and clinical areas.
